Two things about a truck change the choice. The first is height: a lens at the license plate looks at the ground and the bumper, which is the parking view, while a lens above the tailgate or on the cab roof sees the coupler and the trailer, which is what you need for hitching. The second is the bed. A liner, a canopy and a loaded tray sit between a transmitter and a receiver, and they cost a radio link more than the same distance in open air.

Worth settling before you order: what the monitor does when you are not reversing. Fed from the reversing light it wakes in reverse and sleeps otherwise, which is the whole job on a parking camera. Fed from the 12V socket it stays on, which is what you want if the picture is there to watch a load or a trailer on the highway. Both wiring options exist on this page, and the specification table says which is which.

Questions people ask

What buyers ask about the Yakry backup camera for a truck

Which Yakry camera suits your pickup with a tow hitch?

One of the seven-inch systems. You are reading the picture at arm's length while a ball lines up under a coupler, and the extra screen is the difference between guessing and seeing. A monitor that takes two cameras lets you keep a second lens on the curb side.

Where does a Yakry camera mount on your truck?

Either in the license plate frame, which sees the bumper and the ground, or above the tailgate on a bracket, which sees the coupler and the trailer behind it. Both mounts are in the range. The second needs a hole and a grommet.

Will your bed liner affect a Yakry wireless camera?

A liner and a canopy both sit between the two ends of the link and take something off it. On a standard cab that is rarely enough to matter. On a long bed with a hard canopy, the wired kit is the safer choice.

Where this comes from

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, Rear visibility · U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, 49 CFR 571.111. The standard exists "to reduce the number of deaths and injuries that occur when the driver of a motor vehicle does not have a clear and reasonably unobstructed view to the rear". A rearview image is the area directly behind the vehicle shown to the driver through indirect vision on a single display. A backing event starts when reverse is selected and ends when the vehicle has gone forward ten miles an hour, ten meters or ten seconds. Vehicles under 4,536 kg built on or after 1 May 2018 have to show that image within two seconds of the start of a backing event and keep showing it until the driver changes the view or comes out of reverse.
